Encouraging Local Food Production

At last nights Council Meeting I was happy to bring forward A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE RIGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS TO GROW AND CONSUME THEIR OWN FOOD.

Thanks to Mayor Jerry Nabours and Councilor Karla Brewster for their support in getting this non binding Resolution on the agenda. The concept behind the Resolution is to promote and encourage local, sustainable food production for individuals and families.

Surprisingly though, we did not pick up support from a fourth member of Council to move any of the three versions of the Resolution forward at this time.

Vice Mayor Coral Evans and I did agree however to work together in an effort to bring to Council a new version. I thank Vice Mayor Evans and look forward to this opportunity to work with her. I am confident we can create a reasonable resolution that the Council and Flagstaff can support.

  1. Had I realized it was on the agenda, I would have sent comments. (I had a school concert to attend last night.) Carol

  2. Why should be special ordinance about local food production in the natural environment of Mountain Dessert? Because this resolution will be official beginning of the end of this wonderful unique city? Lets kill off these elks, which would would eat our gardens, lets bring new plants, trees, rabbits. You have not enough time to organize the water collection for your plants? This is not a big deal, a couple miles down, and we would deliver this water to your precious garden! This resolution will protect your decision, with out it would not possible to exist in the city of Flagstaff!

  3. I find it hard to believe that any council member would object to people having a vegetable garden in their own yard. I can’t believe any one of the council has the right to tell us we cannot have a vegeteable garden. Trudy W.
