ADD LANDMARKS OVERLAY ZONING TO 3 PROPERTIES
• Yeager House
• Motel DuBeau Travelers Inn and Hostel
• Picture Canyon
The owners of the Yeager House and Motel DuBeau requested this zoning designation. This protects the historic nature of the property(s). Neighbors within 300ft were notified with no objections received.
DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT
The district runs from Humphrey’s to Agassiz and from Cherry to Rt 66. The improvement district allows the property owners within the district to potentially tax themselves in order to facilitate improvements, events and other activities in the district with the ultimate goal of improving the area and increasing business activity. The district consists of 100 properties. 63 properties (63%) voted in favor of forming the district, 37 (37%) opposed (several of the 37 that were counted as no did not vote).
One of the advantages of the district is that it allows a certain amount of control within the district for the properties to determine which services and improvements they wish to do as well as potentially administer events, trash service and other activities.
I voted in favor of forming this district. When private property owners and businesses have more control over their future, more times than not, they prosper and the entire community benefits. When the private sector is willing to risk their own money, their own capital and time, the opportunities can be huge. Shifting more responsibility to the people and businesses in the district will hopefully further unleash opportunities for downtown and for Flagstaff. I’m confident the commitment that’s being made today will ensure that downtown and Flagstaff continues to flourish going forward.
