Guns, Plastic Bags, Majority Rule and Local Control.

Lots of interesting issues coming up at Tuesday’s (11/17) 6:00PM Council Meeting. Hoping to hear your thoughts.

Barotz and PUTZOVA recently asked Council to oppose “dangerous” gun bills from the Legislature. Staff has amended their request to oppose guns in public buildings. I’m not sure which proposal will be pushed but it appears some form of opposition to is being requested. Do you think this is something that should be added to Councils legislative agenda? Email your thoughts to council@flagstaffaz.gov

– Council will be voting on my request that it should require 4 votes (a majority) to move an item forward vs. the current 3 (a minority). Do you think items should advance despite majority opposition? Email your thoughts to council@flagstaffaz.gov

– Council will be voting on Councilmember Coral Evans request to join in a lawsuit against the ban on plastic bag bans the legislature passed. Do you think we should continue to spend time on plastic bags? Email your thoughts to council@flagstaffaz.gov

Other items this Tuesday include a staff proposal to go into an intergovernmental agreement with Summit Fire Department to provide a deputy chief from Flagstaff’s fire department to manage Summits department (essentially a chief) with our fire chief overseeing both departments. Summit would pay Flagstaff about $70,000. I wouldn’t call this a merger but there would be a lot of coordination and shared responsibilities. I have concerns with this proposal.

Another item of possible discussion will be Ms. Putzova’s request to regain lost local control from the state. I’ve stated that if Ms. Putzova supports regaining control from the state she should also support lost control from the federal government, to which she replied she was not aware of any lost local control to the Feds. My response was that this list is quite large. It’ll be interesting to see if Ms. Putzova will be consistent and support regaining local control on both the state and federal level.

Again, your thoughts on any of these issues can be emailed to council@flagstaffaz.gov

Here’s a link to the agenda.

Thanks! See you Tuesday.

  1. “Oppose “dangerous” gun bills from the Legislature”??? If this means we should oppose dangerous guns then I Agree; dangerous guns should be either repaired or removed from service. If the “gun bills” themselves are dangerous then I think we need to look a little further and decide what makes them dangerous. If the content of the ‘bill’ implies a threat to the 2nd amendment, then absolutely it needs to be opposed and with great anxiety. However, as written this is nothing more than an attempt to consume time at the expense of more important issues.
