At Wednesday’s Coronavirus press conference, Governor Ducey did not order any additional statewide mandates.
As cases rise, some Arizona politicians, such as Democrat Mayor of Phoenix Kate Gallego, are demanding a statewide mask mandate among other measures.
During the press conference, Ducey pointed out that several states have higher Covid positive rates while having statewide mask mandates saying that,
“I don’t second-guess other governors. Every governor has got to do what they think is in the best interest of their state,” Ducey said. “What I want to see is the maximum amount of participation.”
The Governor pointed out that 90% of the population of Arizona is already required to wear a mask due to local mandates.
Several governors have decided to inform people of the risks of Covid and encourage residents to use good practices and decide for themselves their risk tolerance when it comes to the coronavirus. Governor DeSantis of Florida recently stated that he “will not lockdown and hurt families who can’t afford to shelter in place for 6 weeks”.
Arizona has seen a recent spike in Covid cases with over 3,000 reported cases on Wednesday. Other states like California and New York have also seen a spike in cases despite stricter mask requirements and stricter restrictions on businesses and individuals.
